Course Overview

The EMG/NCV Diplomate Program (D-EDX) Stages (1-4) MUST be taken in the following sequence

Stage 1: Introduction to Electrodiagnostic Fundamentals

Dive deep into the foundational neuroanatomy and neurophysiology integral to electrodiagnostic testing. This stage emphasizes hands-on learning, equipping participants to execute basic nerve conduction studies and needle EMG on patients within this specialty field. Comprising a 3-day immersive live session, the course is complemented by digital lectures and at-home readings. As part of this stage, participants will also undertake 25 non-patient mentored studies, under the virtual tutelage of a board-certified mentor specializing in clinical electrodiagnosis.

Stage 2: Advanced Electrodiagnostic Techniques and Patient Diagnostics

Building on Stage 1, this segment introduces participants to sophisticated nerve tests, enhancing the diagnostic precision of an EMG/NCV examination. Beyond advanced testing, the curriculum refines your technique, enabling you to discern pathologies and articulate an authoritative electrodiagnostic report. Emphasizing practical engagement, this course includes a 3-day live weekend session, supplemented by online lectures and readings. Post completion, participants can embark on real-patient studies, virtually overseen by a board-certified mentor. This mentorship ensures a guided path to mastery. Furthermore, participants will conduct 25 EMG/NCV studies in their home clinic, in adherence to HIPAA guidelines, ensuring patient anonymity. Each study is electronically assessed by AACE faculty, judged against established rubrics.

Stage 3: Mastery in Advanced EMG/NCV and Introduction to Supplementary Techniques

This stage offers participants an intricate exploration into advanced EMG/NCV methods, emphasizing proximal studies. Moreover, it introduces essential supplementary tests like Neuro-Ultrasound Imaging of primary nerves, SSEP testing, and ANS Training. These advanced techniques augment and enrich the foundational EMG/NCS tests, further bolstering the practitioner’s diagnostic arsenal.

Stage 4: Credentialing and Proficiency Validation

This culminating stage ensures the consolidation and application of skills acquired in Stages 2 and 3. A key component is the on-site mentorship, facilitated by an AACE faculty member visiting the clinician’s clinic. Here, the faculty will directly observe the clinician conducting EMG/NCV studies on patients. This validation process is further enriched by a final 3-day live session, coupled with online lectures and home-based readings. Meeting all these comprehensive criteria paves the way for participants to graduate with the esteemed D-EDX credential (Diplomate in Electrodiagnosis), symbolizing proficiency and expertise in the realm of electrodiagnosis.

Special notes about schedule

Students MUST complete the online lecture material PRIOR to each on-site lecture session

Attendance is MANDATORY at all sessions for the semester students are enrolled in

Detailed Overview of Course

Course Description

  • The most comprehensive Electrodiagnostic program that helps you master:
    • EMG/NCV Testing
    • Neuro-MSK Ultrasound
    • SSEP (Somatosensory Evoked Potential) Testing for the most comprehensive evaluation of the Neuromuscular system
    • ANS (Autonomic Nervous System) Testing for cases of small fiber neuropathy and other autonomic conditions
  • This program includes 12 days of Live Classroom Training with emphasis in laboratory practice.
  • The program also includes a 1 day of live onsite mentorship with a board certified mentor.
  • Completion of 25 non-patient plus 25 patient studies that will be mentored by your board certified mentor via our proprietary mentorship portal.
  • This Course sponsored by the American Academy of Clinical Electrodiagnosis, gathers expert clinicians who are also academic leaders and professors in EMG/NCV to provide you with the knowledge you will need to earn the Diplomate in this specialty area. The in-depth knowledge of each faculty member allows the participant to gain a unique perspective on the clinical practice of this specialty area. The Course offers a paradigm to enable appropriate patient evaluation techniques followed by Electrophysiologic (EMG and NCV) practice techniques that enable efficient and effective practice patterns.
  • Topics in the Course include: anatomy, physiology, biomedical instrumentation, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, patient ethics, and other basic science items. Significant time is spent on learning nerve conduction (motor, sensory and late responses) techniques on most peripheral nerves in both the upper and lower extremity as well as the facial nerve.
  • Needle EMG studies are practiced on all major muscles in both the upper and lower extremity as well as the paraspinal musculature.
  • All material is centered on evidence-based principles.
  • Laboratory practice is an important aspect of this Course as 50% of the Course time is devoted to guided laboratory studies and case study analysis.
  • Integration of the EMG topics to the NCV topics occurs early in the Course and is emphasized and enhanced by case study examinations worked on in small group activities.
  • The student learns the appropriate mechanisms to interpret the EMG/NCV data and develop appropriate reporting strategies.
  • Appropriate discussion on ethical practice is stressed.
  • This course has been approved by most State Boards of PT for CEUs. (see below)

Who may enroll?

  • Enrollment is offered to any licensed health care practitioner in good standing who is permitted by their respective state practice act to perform needle EMG studies.
  • Additionally, foreign-trained healthcare providers (upon documentation of training) may enroll in this course.
