About Course

VNG STANDS FOR VIDEONYSTAGMOGRAPHY

Considered the new standard for testing inner ear functions.

THE PROBLEM

  • 40% of the population will fall during their lifetime – this risk increases with age.
  • 60% of closed head trauma patients report dizziness.
  • 20% of the population have a unilateral vestibular loss.
  • 50% of all adults 65+ have a vestibular problem.
  • 40% of adults 65+ will experience a fall annually.
  • 50% of first time fallers will have repeated falls.

Dizziness and loss of balance are within the top three most common reasons for physician visits by the elderly.

Testing Solution

Videonystagmography (VNG) testing is considered the new standard for testing inner ear functions. VNG measures the movements of the eyes directly through infrared cameras.

VNG testing is used to determine if a vestibular (inner ear) disease may be causing a balance or dizziness problem and is one of the only tests available today that can decipher between a unilateral (one ear) and bilateral (both ears) vestibular loss. VNG testing is a series of tests designed to document a person’s ability to follow visual objects with their eyes and how well the eyes respond to information from the vestibular system.

This test also addresses the functionality of each ear and if a vestibular deficit may be the cause of a dizziness or balance problem. To monitor the movements of the eyes, infrared goggles are placed around the eyes to record eye movements during testing. VNG testing is non-invasive.

Course Overview

This program is designed to provide you with a complete diagnostic solution using VNG technology and help you apply it to its fullest.

Here are the components of the VNG Comprehensive program:

  • cropped-new-hoc-favicon-1.png 2 days VNG Foundations and Instrumentation course. This course can be delivered either live or live/online.
  • cropped-new-hoc-favicon-1.png 1 day report writing workshop. This course gives you the opportunity to learn how to write the VNG reports with all report components.
  • cropped-new-hoc-favicon-1.png 1 day practical application of VNG testing (equipment training). This is done in your facility after you order your VNG machine from our suggested representative and provides you with training on how to use the equipment.
  • cropped-new-hoc-favicon-1.png 50 VNG mentored reports. A mentor will review your reports and provide you with feedback on what to improve in your report writing. This is essentially a virtual mentorship since the VNG mentor will provide feedback to you about your reports.

VNG Foundations and Instrumentation

This course is for healthcare professionals who are involved in performing the VNG test. This course provides practical information necessary to make VNG an effective part of the diagnostic process. The course will address basic vestibular anatomy & physiology and pathophysiology of vestibular disorders. The course will also cover pre-test recommendations, patient setup, recording techniques and administration of oculomotor, positional and the caloric subtests of the VNG exam. Hands-on demonstration will be included.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to properly:

  • Prepare a patient for a VNG exam.
  • Perform an Ocular Motility exam.
  • Perform Dynamic and Static Positional exams.
  • Perform Caloric Irrigations.
  • Identify potential contra-indications or test modifications that may be necessary during VNG.

Detailed Overview of Course

Course Description

  • This Course sponsored by the American Academy of Clinical Electrodiagnosis, gathers expert clinicians who are also academic leaders and professors in VNG Testing to provide you with the knowledge you will need to earn certification in this area. The in-depth knowledge of each faculty member allows the participant to gain a unique perspective on the clinical practice of this specialty area. The Course offers a paradigm to enable appropriate patient evaluation techniques followed by VNG practice techniques that enable efficient and effective practice patterns.
  • Topics in the Course include: anatomy, physiology, biomedical instrumentation, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, patient ethics, and other basic science items.
  • All material is centered on evidence-based principles.
  • Appropriate report generation is an important aspect of this training program and this is why we dedicate an entire course along with 50 mentored studies by a VNG specialist.
  • Enrollment is offered to any licensed health care practitioner in good standing who is permitted to perform VNG studies.
  • Additionally, foreign-trained healthcare providers (upon documentation of training) may enroll in this Course.

Continuing education hours awarded

  • At the completion of the entire program a total of 105 CEU credits available which includes the mentoring of 50 reports and the entire course curriculum. Automatically approved for New York State. If interested for CEUs in any other state, we will provide you with the proper paperwork to get the program approved (registrant must notify AACE 60 days before beginning of Course if assistant in obtaining CEUs are being requested).
  • 105 CEU Category II CMES – applied for by the registrant.
